REGISTRATION AND TEAM FORMATION POLICY

Our goal is to provide a fun, positive environment for every player while keeping teams balanced and focused on development.

Player registration covers the full soccer year (Fall & Spring).

  • Member-only registration for returning players runs January 1st – May 14th.
  • Open registration for all players runs May 15th – June 30th.
  • After June 30th, players are not guaranteed a roster spot and may be placed on a waitlist until space becomes available.
  • Wales Soccer Club uses PlayMetrics for online registration, where families can register and pay securely by credit card.
  • PlayMetrics Login: https://playmetrics.com/login

Starting Fall 2026, age groups will be determined by a player’s school age (August 1st – July 31st birth-year)

As directed by the governing bodies of youth soccer, including US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and WYSA, all member clubs will transition from a birth-year (calendar year cutoff) registration to a school-year registration using an August 1st cutoff date. All clubs statewide will follow this same structure for consistency across leagues and competitions As a member club, this is something we are required to follow.

We recognize that this realignment may result in movement for some players. Please know our commitment remains the same: supporting every player’s development, confidence, and love for the game. Players are incredibly resilient, adjust quickly to new teammates, and form strong bonds within their new groups.

What Does this Mean

  • Players born January 1 – July 31 will move to the next age group as they normally would for the Fall 2026 season.
  • Players born August 1 – December 31 will remain in their current age group for Fall 2026 as part of the new school-year alignment.

Players remaining in the same age group next season are not playing down. They are now placed in the age group that matches their school-year peers, in accordance with U.S. Soccer’s realignment.

  • If your player is young for their grade based on our school age chart, we encourage them to play with their grade-level classmates. This helps prevent the “trapped 8th grader” situation later in middle school and keeps players with their peer group.
  • If your player is older for their grade based on our school age chart, they must play in their designated age group as outlined. These guidelines support proper player development and ensure a fair and consistent competitive environment for all players.

Benefits of School-Year Age Grouping

This policy change offers meaningful advantages for player development and family experience:

  • Enhanced Team Cohesion: Players train and compete with school classmates
  • Reduced Scheduling Conflicts: Alignment with school calendars and activities
  • Improved Player Development: Age-appropriate competition while maintaining peer connections
  • Social & Emotional Development: Players grow alongside peers they see daily at school
  • Alignment with Community Practices: Matches the structure used by schools and many youth sports organizations
  • Reduced “Trapped Players” in 8th Grade: Under the old calendar-year system, some players reached 8th grade but were placed in age groups that did not align with their school peers, leaving them without a natural team during middle school years. School-year grouping keeps players with classmates through this transition, preventing players from being isolated from both their grade-level peers and appropriate teams.
  • College Recruitment Clarity: Graduation year designation provides clearer context for college coaches

School-Year Age Grouping – Parent Q&A

What is the cutoff date?
August 1st. Players born between August 1st and July 31st of the following year are placed in the same age group.

My child was born in December. Will they move?
Players born between January 1st and July 31st remain in the same competitive group. Players born between August 1st and December 31st now align with their school age year, which may change the age group name but keeps them with classmates.

Can my child still play with current teammates?
Many players sharing the same graduation year will continue together. During the transition, we will help players get comfortable with new teams while maintaining positive club connections.

What if my child wants to play up?
Players U10 and below may be considered to play one year up based on ability, safety, mental readiness, and team fit. U11+ requests must be reviewed and approved as well for appropriate skill placement and safety. All play-up requests are handled on a case-by-case basis through the WSC Club Director.

Can my child play down?
No. Playing down is not permitted per WYSA and national rules, except in documented medical or developmental circumstances. This policy ensures competitive balance and player safety across all age groups.

Will my child be at a disadvantage?
No. Players remain grouped with peers from the same birth-year range, now aligned with school-year labels. Being with classmates often improves confidence, chemistry, and enjoyment.

PLAYER PLACEMENT & REGISTRATION GUIDELINES

In alignment with national youth soccer rules and Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association school-year placement guidelines:

  • Players are not permitted to play down an age group.
  • WYSA follows school-year placement using an August 1st cutoff, so players at the grassroots level (U6–U10) typically remain within their assigned age group.
  • U10 and under players may be considered to play one year up only if they demonstrate advanced skill for their current age level. Any request to play up must be submitted for review and approved based on appropriate placement, player safety, and team fit.
  • For players U11 and above, any request to play up must be submitted for review and approved based on appropriate placement, player safety, and team fit.
  • All requests to play up are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Families must contact WSC Club Director for review and approval prior to registration if they would like their player evaluated for playing up.

TEAM FORMATION

Our Grassroots U6–U10 recreational teams will follow the WYSA policy regarding grassroots play. Our U6-U10 teams are newly formed each year to promote fairness, balance, and equal playing opportunities for every child.

WYSA Policies Regarding Grassroots Play – Policy 310-001:

  • A grassroots player is one who is assigned to a team that plays in a grassroots league.
  • All teams under the age of 10 are considered grassroots teams.
  • Grassroots teams are newly formed each year using a publicly stated method intended to create balance, such as a draft, random assignment, or grouping by neighborhood or school area.

Wales Soccer Club – U9 Player Policy

  • U9 and U10 players are combined into a single age group for team formation.
  • U9 players will be evenly distributed among teams with U10 players to maintain fair and balanced teams.
  • Friend requests for U9 players are not guaranteed if honoring them would create unbalanced teams.
  • U9 players will generally play at the U9/U10 level for two consecutive seasons, depending on their skill level and development.
  • All team placements are at the discretion of WSC staff to ensure a positive, fair, and safe playing experience.

TEAM REQUEST POLICY

  • No coach requests will be accepted at the U6–U10 level. Coaches may change from year to year, and this helps us maintain fairness across all teams.
  • One mutual friend request is allowed per player (both players must list each other).
  • Friend requests are not guaranteed.
  • No friend requests will be accepted after June 30th/ late registrations.
  • During registration, please list your child’s school name to help us group players socially when possible.
  • Early registration gives you the best chance for any friend request or school-based placements to be fulfilled.
  • We accept preferred practice day requests, but please only submit one if your player truly needs a specific day. If you require a certain practice day, you must indicate this at registration.
    • Preferred practice day requests take priority over friend requests. If two friends need different practice days, they will be placed on different teams.
    • Volunteer coaches will provide their availability, and players will be assigned to teams whose practice days align with an available coach. We will do our best to honor preferred practice days, but it is not guaranteed, as team placement depends on volunteer coach availability. If a team fills, your preferred day may no longer be available.

UNIFORMS

  • Uniform kits are included with registration cost and consist of a jersey, shorts, and socks.
  • Families are responsible for providing shin guards, cleats, and a soccer ball.
  • Late registrations do not include a late fee
  • Important Note: Late player registrations will be responsible for ordering their own uniform kits (jersey, shorts, socks) at their own expense.
  • We use Hummel for all Milwaukee Torrent gear.
