Rain Delay Used For Team Building
The final preseason match of 2018 started off with a beautiful aerial display of lightning, a delay to kickoff and a fun locker room game by the Torrent caught on video. Once on the field, the Torrent jumped out early, and held on for a 3:2 victory over Elmbrook United U19.
As the two teams took to the field for warm-ups, a line of thunderstorms quickly pushed into the area, forcing both teams to return to the locker rooms. During the delay the Torrent men put their heads together and figured out a way to bond as a squad. After a roughly 30-minute delay, the teams were cleared to return to the field.
It didn’t take the Torrent long to find their stride. Roughly 3 minutes in, Michael Da-Silva found his scoring touch for the first time this preseason, and was followed up by a goal by Abe Kanneh.
After Elmbrook found themselves on the score sheet midway through the first half, it was a ball in by Drew Ruggles that found Mark Hutchinson off a rebound to make the score 3:1 at halftime.
“It wasn’t the prettiest goal I’ve scored,” describes Hutchinson. “But, I’ll take it.”
Elmbrook United came out swinging in the second half. After the Torrent substituted out many of the roster players, Elmbrook scored their second goal of the match, and had two golden opportunities to tie the match, but just missed converting them both.
“Overall, I think we are starting to find ourselves,” said Andrew Wiedabach after the match. “It’s been a tough preseason, but we have shown that the talent level is high in this locker room. The more we can work together the better we will get. Right now, it’s all about taking what we have learned from Coach Davi on how to run our offense and physically applying it on the field.”
